Karges pool closed
The Karges pool has been closed since June 5; it will remain closed
indefinitely. The decision to forego the immediate repair needed and
keep the pool offline was made in light of the cost of repairs, the
likelihood of further breakdowns, and the personnel and materials cost
associated with maintenance of the fifty-year-old facility. The pool,
constructed in 1957, has extensive rust and corrosion making it
difficult to maintain in a safe and fiscally prudent manner. Work is in
progress to make alternate arrangements for a practice facility for the
UWRF swim team and for course-related uses of the pool. There will not
be alternate facilities available for the recreational and fitness
activities that have utilized the Karges pool. The proposed Health and
Human Performance building, yet to be approved for funding by the State
of Wisconsin, includes a pool in its preliminary design. Contact Lisa
Wheeler at ext. 3737.
