Red Cross Blood Drive going on in Falcons Nest


A three-day Red Cross Blood Drive is underway in the Falcon’s Nest, UC, through Thursday, Oct. 22, from noon-6 p.m.each day. Walk-ins welcome or sign up to donate at http://www.redcrossblood.org/give/drive/driveSearchList.jsp?zipSponsor=UWRF. The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime. Photo by Kathy M Helgeson.

Year of Mexico book discussion lineup
The Year of Mexico Book Discussion Series has an exciting lineup for fall and spring semesters. Please join us in the Library Breezeway for these upcoming discussions:
Tuesday, Oct. 28, 3:30 p.m., Provost Fernando Delgado will lead a discussion of Roger Magazine's "Golden and Blue Like My Heart:  Masculinity, Youth, and Power among Soccer Fans in Mexico" (Library Main Collection GV943.9.S64 M34 2007).
Thursday, Nov. 5, 3:30 p.m., English Professor Marshall Toman will lead a discussion of Steven Hill's "Raw Deal:  How the ‘Uber' Economy and Runaway Capitalism are Screwing American Workers" (Library Main Collection HC110.I55 H55 2015). This discussion is in advance of Steven Hill's visit to campus on Nov/ 10.
Discussions for spring include Bernal Dias Del Castillo's "The Conquest of New Spain" (F1230 .D5378) led by Alex Hatheway, Octavio Paz' "The Labyrinth of Solitude" (F1210 .P318 1985) led by Sergio Valverde, and Jean Molesky-Poz' "Contemporary Maya Spirituality:  The Ancient Ways are Not Lost" (available online at http://uw-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/RF:Everything:UWI71359488300002121) led by Stephen Parliament. Trick or treating for local food pantry
UWRF student-athletes will be "trick or treating" for canned goods from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, throughout River Falls. All donations will support the River Falls Community Food Pantry. For more information, email [log in to unmask].

Undergraduate Stipends & Expenses (USE) Grant deadline Nov. 12
The USE Grant is intended to assist undergraduates in covering expenses necessary to conduct research. New for Fall 2015: grant award amounts for undergraduate researchers and for their faculty or staff mentors have just been increased. Grant awards are available for individual and collaborative projects. Funds may be used to purchase eligible research supplies, to support student stipends to compensate for time allocated to projects, and for travel associated with conducting research. Celebration of the Life of Jerry Carstens
A Celebration of the Life of Jerry Carstens, professor emeritus, will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, from 1-3 p.m. at Junior’s, 414 South Main Street, River Falls. Music will be provided by the Mouldy Figs. An opportunity will be available for those who wish to offer remembrances, and Miller Lite, Jerry’s favorite beverage, will be available for toasts. Melon Day, Thursday, Oct. 22, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., UC and UC mall. Student Involvement's Give Gain (events that allow students to give and gain without leaving campus) is collaborating with the Love Your Melon Campus Crew to sell Love Your Melon Hats in the UC lobby. Love Your Melon is an apparel company whose goal is to put hats on every child battling cancer. By buying a hat, you can give a hat to a child or family member affected by pediatric cancer. Buy a hat, try melon bowling, enjoy melonade at this campus event.

TTAP panel discussion with 2015 participants sharing what they learned about teaching, Taiwanese culture and international friendship in the Eau Galle River Room, 332 UC. Each year UWRF sends a delegation of English teachers in training to Taiwan to teach at Shih Hsin University's English Summer Institute. UWRF’s longest running education abroad program will be holding an information session for students interested in participating Fall Semester 2016.
