IceCube in the news

[cid:2D060B28-721C-455C-AB83-4256D7E6915D]

Physics and engineering student, Nick Jensen, left, physics Professor Jim Madsen, center, and physics major, Nick Kulacz, right, watch the LED light movement of the IceCube model as part of a summer project using data taken when LEDs deployed in the ice are flashed and the whole detector reads out the light patterns that is seen. Since the amount of light emitted by the LEDs is known, the light patterns seen can be used by the rest of the detector to determine the optical properties of ice in the detector. Neutrinos are detected by observing the light emitted by the particles they produce when they smash into the ice. Twelve students (nine supported by NSF funding and three from UWRF/IceCube funding) worked on three projects over the summer.
