Camp helps 8th graders explore engineering

Logan Sowers, 13, of River Falls, builds a bridge out of toothpicks Wednesday morning on campus. Sowers is one of 34 students participating in Camp Badger Exploring Engineering, a week-long residential summer camp for students from the Twin Cities and throughout Wisconsin entering 8th grade in the fall. The camp, founded by the UW-Madison College of Engineering, introduces students to science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines with campus activities and field trips to area companies. The toothpick bridge followed a trip to the Stillwater Bridge site. Students were given parameters to work within and will be judged for prizes. Their work will be judged on the strength of the bridge, its weight, the aesthetics, workmanship, and creative design. Other camp sessions are held in Madison and Oshkosh. Photo by Kathy M Helgeson.
