Tea ceremony ends semester of study

[cid:421CED31-376F-48BB-B957-D0CE01ED1DA0]

Magara Maeda, Japanese language instructor, treated her students to a Japanese tea ceremony Thursday in the Alumni Room, SH. The history of the Japanese tea ceremony dates back centuries with symbolism in its quiet practice embodying harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. The tea is made from powdered green tea, called Matcha, and is served with sweets. Maeda, wearing a traditional kimono, in a choreographed ritual seated on a floor mat, first demonstrated how to prepare the tea, then serve it. Each student then prepared and served a bowl of tea to another.
