'Year of Germany' event is pre-Lenten festival

Fasching, a traditional pre-Lenten festival dating back centuries much like Mardi Gras, features music, dancing, food and prizes. Another "Year of Germany" event is set for tomorrow, March 7, at noon in Abbott Concert Hall, KFA. "Music of Germany" with the St. Croix Valley Symphony Orchestra features music by Mozart, Wagner, Bach, and Mahler. The concert, with guest conductor Layton "Skip" James of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, acclaimed Metropolitan Opera Vocalist Margaret Jane Wray, and violinists Kristin Cassada and Sharon Zietrath, is free and open to the public. Student media win professional recognition
Student journalists for the campus newspaper and radio station have been recognized for their work by Wisconsin's two leading professional media organizations:  the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. Free and open to the public; no prior genealogy experience necessary. Darcy Boock of the St. Croix Valley Genealogical Society, an experienced German genealogy researcher, is the presenter.

Wednesday, March 12, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m., State Capitol, Madison, Posters in the Rotunda. Nearly 200 undergraduates, including eight UWRF students, will share their research on a variety of topics with legislators, state leaders, UW alumni, and other supporters. *  10 a.m.-8 p.m., Gallery 101, KFA, BFA Student Art Exhibition with seniors Lauren Forsythe, Nicole Pederson, and David Steinmetz. Forsythe is displaying a collection of large scale fiber wall-hangings created by using Japanese dyeing techniques, Pederson is displaying a collection large scale oil and acrylic paintings depicting classical portraiture in an unconventional way, and Steinmetz is showcasing digital pigmented prints and polymer gravure prints.Contact the Art Department at 3266.

*  7 p.m., Riverview Ballroom, UC, Spring 2014 Working Journalists Seminar:  "The Challenges of Marriage and the Media:  Making the Job and Marriage Work." Panel discussion about work/life balance by two couples (Angela Davis & Duchesne Drew and Eric Ebert & Helen Clarke Ebert) who work/have worked in the news business. Free and open to the public.

*  7:30 p.m., Abbott Concert Hall, KFA, 4th Annual Dancing With the Stars hosted by the UWRF Dance Team. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $7.

*  7:30 p.m., Syse Theatre, KFA, University Theatre:  "Vinegar Tom." Set in 16th or 17th Century rural England but with a contemporary feel, "Vinegar Tom" is a play by Obie Award Winning Author Caryl Churchill. It tells the story of two farm women who are named as witches by a man whom they have both spurned. The connection between fear of femaie sexuality and witch hysteria is shown to be at the root of many of society's problems. Tickets are $11/adult, $9/senior, and $6/student with ID. The play is intended for mature audiences only with additional performances March 7 and 8.

Now You Know

UWRF ceramics Professor Randy Johnston is the recipient of a 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). The award recognizes his professional achievements as an artist in the field of ceramics and his outstanding legacy and influence as an educator. Johnston will receive the award on Friday, March 21, during a special presentation at the conference<http://www.nceca.net> in Milwaukee.

At the NCECA conference, the exhibition "Grounded in Wisconsin" will feature the works of Johnston, Jan McKeachie-Johnston (past UWRF faculty), Rhonda Willers (UWRF faculty) and 13 other alumni of the UWRF ceramics program. The exhibition is on display Wednesday, March 19-Friday, March 21 at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee. The exhibition was curated by Willers and selected by the NCECA Curatorial Committee. A reception that is open to the public is set for Thursday, March 20, from 6-8 p.m. For more information about the conference and demonstrations and discussions which involve Willers, visit http://www.nceca.net.
