United States Senator Ron Johnson will speak on campus this evening. His presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Trimbelle River Room of the University Center.

Welcome Students from the La Crosse Promise
The Admissions Office is hosting students from the La Crosse Promise, an organization from La Crosse on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 10:30 a.m. The group will receive an admissions overview and a tour of campus, along with lunch. New Venture Competition Announced

A kick-off event for the new UWRF New Venture Competition is scheduled for this Thursday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. in the Alumni Room, South Hall. The mission of the New Venture Competition is to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit among UWRF students and faculty, develop external funding, and identify campus participants for the Wisconsin Big Idea Tournament. Over the next six months, teams composed of at least one student and one faculty or staff member will propose and develop an idea for a new business, with the opportunity to win up to $4,000 to bring their idea to reality. All prizes and operating expenses for the New Venture Competition are provided by the Wisconsin Big Idea Tournament, the WiSys Technology Foundation, and Fiberstar. Vacancy notice--internal candidates only
Ad hoc Program Specialist, with a working title of University Fellow for Diversity & Inclusivity. This is a new pilot initiative in which a current member of the faculty or staff will devote 50 percent of their time (9 month) supporting and advancing diversity and inclusive excellence on campus, with a focus on the faculty and staff workforce. The appointment will be for two academic years, with an anticipated end date of Jan. 9, 2017. The individual in this position will work closely with the Chancellor's Cabinet, Deans' Council, Human Resources, key Faculty Senate committees (Diversity and Inclusivity Committee, Affirmative Action Advisory Committee, Disability Advisory Committee), and others to advance the goal of having a workforce that is diverse, talented, engaged, and supported in their roles. Semester Abroad:  Europe informational meeting
The Semester Abroad: Europe program is holding an informational meeting in 103 Davee Library on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 5 p.m., with a repeat session on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. Program participants spend a semester immersing themselves in topics and in countries of their own choosing. They earn a total of 12 credits:  six in a major and/or minor and six in International Studies. Credits earned through the program can also satisfy university and general education requirements. Snowblower/lawn mower tuneups
The UWRF Ag Industries Club is offering Snow Blower/Lawn Mower Tuneups through Monday, Oct. 20. Tuneup includes oil change, new spark plug, new air filter, blades sharpened, washed and greased. Prices are: $40/snow blower, $50/push mower, $80/rider, $25/pickup and drop off round trip. Additional charges may occur if extensive repairs are needed or parts cost becomes extensive. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m., 201 Ag Science, "Jade Sky: Astronomy in China," a planetarium presentation as part of UWRF's celebration of the Year of China. Sponsored by the UWRF Physics Department. The program lasts about 45 minutes and will present ancient Chinese constellations, how they are related to western designations, Chinese astronomy mythology, and modern Chinese contributions to space travel. The program is free, open to the public and university students, and is suitable for all ages.

Thursday, Oct. 16, 7:30 p.m., Abbott Concert Hall, KFA, Symphony Band/University Band Concert. Music by Percy Grainger, John Philip Sousa, Jose Rafael Pascual Vilaplana, Gregory Fritz and more. Special guest Ivan Konev plays music from Claire de Lune by Claude Debussy and Toccatina by Nikolai Kapustin. Admission is $5/adults, $3/seniors, and $2/students.
