Graduate school guru speaks on campus

Don Asher, a writer and speaker who specializes in higher education and careers, offers advice during a lecture and Q & A session in the UC Thursday. At this session, Asher spoke about writing effective letters of recommendation to graduate school admission committees. Other sessions focused on writing top-notch personal statements, funding opportunities and how to best support students applying to graduate school. Events scheduled next week for veteran's participation
Veterans, in recognition of your service, events are scheduled next week for your participation:
*  The Veterans’ Club will be hosting a table in the UC collecting food/material donations for the Turning Point Women’s Shelter. Volunteers are needed at the table. A list of items the shelter is in need of can be viewed at http://www.turningpoint-wi.org/how_to_help/14-needs-list.
*  Saturday, Nov.  9:  The Athletics Department is offering free admission to veterans and their guests to the final home game of the season. Ticket requests must be made through the Veterans’ Services office in 220 South Hall.
*  Monday, Nov. 11, 11 a.m., Veterans’ Recognition Ceremony at the flagpoles near North Hall.  At 11:30 a.m.,   volunteers are encouraged to serve meals to disable veterans at the River Falls American Legion.
*  Wednesday, Nov. 13, 7:30-9 a.m., Veteran’s are welcome to attend a Breakfast Reception in the Trimbelle River Room, UC. J-term and spring semester Request for Certification forms will be available for your convenience.

Undergraduate Stipends & Expenses grant now available
The Undergraduate Stipends & Expenses Grant is intended to assist in covering expenses necessary to conduct research. Funds may be used for travel to conduct research; to purchase supplies including, but not limited to, books, software, disposable lab supplies, instructional materials, and printing; and to support student stipends to compensate for time allocated to projects. Grant awards are available to individual projects, collaborative projects, and faculty mentors. Condolences
Please join the university community in extending our sincere condolences to the family of Deb Johnson (University Police and Parking). Deb's husband, Mark, age 54, died Nov. 6 after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at Goodrich Funeral Home in Durand, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at Sabylund Lutheran Church, Stockholm. Flowers will be sent on behalf of UWRF. In lieu of additional flowers, donations to the family may be dropped off to Jan Aamodt in 27 South Hall (University Police and Parking) through the end of the day on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

This framework engages communities in identifying key issues and framing them around universal human values. Jehnsen was an activist and organizer in the Chicago Movement working with Dr. King.  He has since dedicated his life to codifying the strategy and philosophy of Dr. King's nonviolent social change work into training opportunities for others. Free and open to the public.
