The Student Support Services Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times: Friday, September 28 at 11:30 a.m.-Saturday, September 29 at 8:00 p.m.
Activity: McNair/SSS Graduate School Retreat, Chula Vista Resort, Wisconsin Dells, WI
Academic Rationale for Absence: The McNair/SSS Graduate School Retreat is an opportunity for first generation, low income and underrepresented students in higher education to learn more about the Graduate School admissions process. Don Asher, a nationally recognized graduate school speaker, will lead the retreat. He will offer students the opportunity to learn about graduate school essays, the admissions process, and procuring funding such as fellowships and assistantships for graduate and PhD programs. The retreat offers underrepresented students workshops on challenges facing underrepresented students, discovering top programs in your field of study, how to plan for the GRE, and how to represent difficulties (low grades, low GRE scores and others) in the best light. Participants will learn how to write an outstanding statement of purpose and how to complete applications effectively.
