RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event
FROM: David Zlesak Plant and Earth Science
The Plant and Earth Science Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): Wednesday Oct 21 from 8AM to noon
Activity: Field trip to Bailey Nurseries and Gertens Greenhouse to tour facilities. Gertens is the largest single location garden center in all the upper Midwest and has the most extensive woody plant selection around. We will tour their retail and wholesale locations and learn how they manage their retail ready stock keeping it healthy and salable along the way for their consumers and learn about consumer preferences. We will also stop at Bailey Nurseries to go to their collection gardens and observe plantings of mature specimens of current cultivars of popular plant groups to expose students to the range of forms found within the plant species we are learning.
Academic Rationale for Absence: HORT 352 Woody Landscape Plants is a class where students learn plant taxonomy, identification, and care. Students have experienced mature specimens of plants on campus and in the community of the species we are learning. Observing the plants in the sales settings and seeing the challenges and opportunities that nurseries are faced with when growing different plant groups will be very helpful. Many students will go into horticultural sales and landscaping and seeing the plants we learn about at the retail stage and learning about their management in the retail environment would be very valuable. In addition, Bailey Nurseries is a leading plant introducer and grower and seeing mature specimens of a range of cultivars they sell wholesale (many are newer and we don’t have them on or near campus) will help students gain a stronger feeling for the diversity in these plant groups and what consumers have access to.

8.2.11 University Sponsored Off-campus Activities and Field Trips: Students will not be penalized for missing class in order to participate in University sanctioned events. If class attendance is a requirement, missing a class in order to participate in a University-sanctioned event will not be counted as an absence. Such absences do not relieve the students of any of their class responsibilities (e.g., homework, exams, lecture notes, etc.). Students are responsible for completing course requirements that are due on the dates of University-sanctioned events per prior agreement with the instructor. A University-sanctioned event is defined to be any extracurricular event (e.g., educational field trips or conferences, theatrical performances, intercollegiate athletic contests, musical performance or tours, etc.) as approved by the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
