RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event
FROM: Karen Klyczek, Biology Department
The Biology Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): Friday, December 7 – Saturday, December 8
Activity: Emily will be representing UWRF at the Tiny Earth in Tinseltown symposium. This event is sponsored by the Tiny Earth organizers at UW-Madison, as an opportunity to showcase the research being done for this project. UWRF is involved by incorporating the project into BIOL 160 labs. Emily will present a poster.
Academic Rationale for Absence: As part of the Tiny Earth network, BIOL 160 students are isolating soil bacteria and testing them for their ability to produce antibiotic compounds. It is important that we stay connected to the network by sharing our results and learning from the other participating institutions. This is an excellent opportunity for Emily to learn presentation skills such as organizing data and other information on a poster and discussing her research with other scientists.
