Classroom Response System Proposal:
In August of 2007 Textbook Services was directed to purchase the iClicker classroom response system (CRS) for campus. Since acquiring the system nearly 10 years ago the software used to run the iClicker bases has updated and improved leaving our bases outdated and difficult to update. Additionally many of the clickers purchased have been damaged and no longer function. Purchasing clickers to match the current clickers in inventory in bulk is difficult and expensive because there is a new generation of clickers available. Due to these factors, Textbook Services approached the Learning Resources Committee about updating the CRS for campus. A major factor involved in selecting the next CRS is cost. Textbook Services does not have the budget to purchase the next system for campus and it does not align with the mission of Textbook Services, which is to supply instructional content for classes. The committee has taken the time to meet with reps from iClicker and spoken with DoTS about the purchase and support of the next generation of classroom response system. DoTS does not have the budget to support the outright purchase of the next generation of CRS as well. The committee has also researched free classroom response systems as well. However, there are many limitations with the free systems and it requires students to have a Wi-Fi enabled device to bring to class. With all of these factors, the Learning Resources Committee recommends that students be required to purchase either an individual iClicker device or an iClicker subscription that they can use in classes that want to use a classroom response system. The student would need to purchase the device or subscription once during their course of study at UWRF. The approximate cost of the device or subscription is about $45.00.
