announcement: Approved 11/28/2016 TO: UWRF Colleagues
RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event
FROM: Rellen Hardtke, Physics
DATE: November 25, 2016
The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) 101-04 course, The Universe in 14 Weeks, is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times: Thursday, December 8, 2016, 10:00am - 3:00pm
Activity: Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM), St. Paul, MN and A Beautiful Planet film
Academic Rationale for Absence: SMM’s exhibits complement the course content of CAS 101-04 in a hands-on, visual, interactive way. The film, A Beautiful Planet, provides a portrait of Earth from space, providing a unique perspective and understanding of our planet and galaxy, central goals of the course. The film, made in collaboration with NASA, features footage of earth, and effects humans have had on it, taken from the ISS (International Space Station). The course includes sections on the history of earth as a planet, our place in the universe, evolution, and climate change – all items covered in the film and in SMM exhibits.
