RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event
FROM: Joy Amel, Music Department
The Music Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): Friday, November 6th, depart @ 6am, return @ 8pm; November 7th, depart @ 7:30am, return @ 5:30pm
Activity: National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) - Wisconsin Chapter Auditions
UW-Eau Claire
Haas Fine Arts Center
Eau Claire WI 54702
Academic Rationale for Absence: Provides our Applied Voice students the opportunity to perform vocal literature for a panel of three judges (NATS members) and to receive the judges’ written comments/critiques. Singers have the possibility of advancing to Semi-Finals and Finals. All attendees may choose to observe performances by other singers of various levels (from high school through graduate school) during the initial and Semi-Final rounds. All Finals are held on Saturday, and are open for observation. Saturday Finals are sequential, so all may listen to the finalists from every division. Participation in Wisconsin NATS Auditions provides our students with the opportunity for performance experience as well as valuable feedback on their skills. Observation of other singers’ performances can inspire students to a heightened desire for excellence as well as offer exposure to a rich variety of repertoire.

8.2.11 University Sponsored Off-campus Activities and Field Trips: Students will not be penalized for missing class in order to participate in University sanctioned events. If class attendance is a requirement, missing a class in order to participate in a University-sanctioned event will not be counted as an absence. Such absences do not relieve the students of any of their class responsibilities (e.g., homework, exams, lecture notes, etc.). Students are responsible for completing course requirements that are due on the dates of University-sanctioned events per prior agreement with the instructor. A University-sanctioned event is defined to be any extracurricular event (e.g., educational field trips or conferences, theatrical performances, intercollegiate athletic contests, musical performance or tours, etc.) as approved by the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
