TO: UWRF Colleagues
RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event
FROM: Beth Rausch, Animal Science
The Animal Science Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): November 17 noon until November 18 7pm, 2016
Activity: Oshkosh State Correctional Institute and Journey Together Service Dog Agency field trip for the UWRF Service Dog Training Program. Educational exchange seminar with the inmates of the Journey Together Service Dog Ttraining program.
Academic Rationale for Absence: This field trip is the culmination of the internship experience for the service dog training program students. They have spent the semester working with a dog from rescue, and - if the dog is able and ready - they bring the dog to Oshkosh for evaluation and possible entry into the Journey Together Training Program. The inmates prepare an elaborate training / demonstration seminar for the students, and the students prepare an academic presentation for the inmates. The information exchange benefits both populations, and the students who went on this field trip last describe it as transformative.
