RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event
FROM: Jill Coleman Wasik
The Plant and Earth Science Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): 12 pm February 15- 6pm February 17, 2019
Activity: Wisconsin Wildlife Federation Conservation Leadership Corps—is a program that provides training in leadership, policy development, and communication and advocacy surrounding natural resource conservation.
Academic Rationale for Absence: In 2013, the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation (WWF) initiated a new program to assist in the development of future conservation leaders in Wisconsin, known as the Wisconsin Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC). WWF based the CLC on a highly successful and similar project developed by the Conservation Federation of Missouri, a counterpart organization in the National Wildlife Federation. The CLC is designed to provide expert training for seniors in high school along with college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to develop leadership skills and techniques to allow students the ability to analyze as well as develop conservation policies in his or her subject of interest. Students involved will also gain experience advocating their conservation resolutions at the Annual Meeting for the WWF. Successfully written and presented conservation resolutions may be adopted by WWF to serve as official polices. Training will be provided by current and former natural resource professionals in both public, non-profit as well as private sectors. Students will be presented with real-world experience and will receive feedback from professionals with expertise in conservation policy. Such interactions will be valuable to participants in relation to school success, future career aspirations, and involvement in conservation organizations. It is an honor to be selected for participation in this program and an excellent opportunity for these students to extend their learning beyond the classroom and develop their professional network and skill sets.

8.2.11 University Sponsored Off-campus Activities and Field Trips: Students will not be penalized for missing class in order to participate in University sanctioned events. If class attendance is a requirement, missing a class in order to participate in a University-sanctioned event will not be counted as an absence. Such absences do not relieve the students of any of their class responsibilities (e.g., homework, exams, lecture notes, etc.). Students are responsible for completing course requirements that are due on the dates of University-sanctioned events per prior agreement with the instructor. A University-sanctioned event is defined to be any extracurricular event (e.g., educational field trips or conferences, theatrical performances, intercollegiate athletic contests, musical performance or tours, etc.) as approved by the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
