RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event
FROM: Andris Straumanis, Communication and Media Studies
The Communication and Media Studies Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): Thursday, Feb. 23, through Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017.
Activity: Wisconsin Newspaper Association annual convention, Middleton, Wisconsin.
Academic Rationale for Absence: The students are members of the Student Voice campus newspaper. The WNA convention provides educational seminars in editorial and business aspects of news organizations. The convention also provides the opportunity for students to network with peers at other Wisconsin colleges and universities, plus meet with professionals in the news industry and explore career options. Finally, the Student Voice will be receiving several awards for its journalism in the annual College Better Newspaper Contest.
