The Psychology Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): April 29th, 2015 (8:30AM) to May 1st, 2015 (7:00PM)
Activity: Students will be traveling to attend and present papers at the Annual Conference of the Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA), a premier event that represents a tremendous opportunity for students.
Academic Rationale for Absence: MPA is the oldest regional psychology organization in the United States, first meeting in 1901. The Midwest has historically been an epicenter for American psychology and many of the top doctoral programs in the field are located in this region (e.g., the University of Minnesota, Purdue, the University of Illinois). Thus, in many ways the MPA meeting functions more like a national conference in that it attracts top faculty and students in the field. Keynote speakers at the event rival those of national conferences in terms of their visibility in the field. The Department of Psychology at UWRF has a rich history of sending students to this meeting, where they are able to interact with other students and faculty to share their research findings and develop their presentation skills. We will be sending a large contingent of over twenty students and six faculty members, which represents a strong presence that should rival that of any university. The majority of students participating in past MPA meetings have gone on to successful graduate careers, many at the doctoral level. They report that the experience was instrumental in terms of (a) strengthening their graduate applications, (b) helping them develop core skills in research, and (c) providing opportunities to network with key faculty from programs in the field of psychology. Given UWRF’s significant focus on URSCA, this opportunity is well aligned with our mission.

8.2.11 University Sponsored Off-campus Activities and Field Trips: Students will not be penalized for missing class in order to participate in University sanctioned events. If class attendance is a requirement, missing a class in order to participate in a University-sanctioned event will not be counted as an absence. Such absences do not relieve the students of any of their class responsibilities (e.g., homework, exams, lecture notes, etc.). Students are responsible for completing course requirements that are due on the dates of University-sanctioned events per prior agreement with the instructor. A University-sanctioned event is defined to be any extracurricular event (e.g., educational field trips or conferences, theatrical performances, intercollegiate athletic contests, musical performance or tours, etc.) as approved by the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
