RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event

FROM: Dr. James C. Graham, Agricultural Education Department

The Agricultural Education Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.

Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): Mon., March 9 leave 11:30 a.m. for Mishicot HS, leave 2:15 p.m. for Osseo-Fairchild HS and Tue., March 10 leave 7 a.m. for Zumbrota HS, leave 11:50 a.m. for Oconto Falls HS, leave 12:15 p.m. for Sauk Prairie HS and Mon., March 23 leave 2:45 p.m. for Amery HS and Tues., March 24 leave 1:20 p.m. for Spencer HS

Activity: Conduct Parliamentary Procedure Contests.

Academic Rationale for Absence: These contests allow UWRF students to further develop their leadership skills. This is a service learning project assisting Wisconsin FFA members to develop an understanding of how to conduct business meetings and understand parliamentary procedure effectively. These contests allow UWRF students a continuation of their classroom learning as teacher candidates in agricultural education. Specific outcomes include assessing and critiquing student performance; engaging learners; and providing feedback. Moreover, this event fulfills one component of the agricultural education goal of student service to the professional community. Furthermore, these students are gaining valuable connections of networking with professionals in the field of agricultural education. Thank you for your support for this off-campus educational activity!

8.2.11 University Sponsored Off-campus Activities and Field Trips: Students will not be penalized for missing class in order to participate in University sanctioned events. If class attendance is a requirement, missing a class in order to participate in a University-sanctioned event will not be counted as an absence. Such absences do not relieve the students of any of their class responsibilities (e.g., homework, exams, lecture notes, etc.). Students are responsible for completing course requirements that are due on the dates of University-sanctioned events per prior agreement with the instructor. A University-sanctioned event is defined to be any extracurricular event (e.g., educational field trips or conferences, theatrical performances, intercollegiate athletic contests, musical performance or tours, etc.) as approved by the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
