RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event
FROM: Connie Smith, Instructor: CAFES – Agricultural Engineering – GENG201 Industrial Safety
The Agricultural Engineering Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): Monday, March 6, 2017, leaving 1 PM and returning 6 PM
Activity: Field trip to tour Cardinal Glass Industries and Andersen Corporation both located in Menomonie, WI and interact with two site safety specialists.
Academic Rationale for Absence: The Industrial Safety course (GENG201) serves as an introduction to industrial safety where the student will be able to examine time-tested concepts and techniques of safety and health management and understand their application in an operational environment. The majority of students who take this course as an elective are in the agricultural engineering curriculum for CAFES. Extensive emphasis is placed on mandatory government standards and their role in identification, analysis, and control of risks that are inherent to a variety of manufacturing operations. Visiting these two operations is very beneficial as they will see the manufacturing operation from making glass out of sand and then using the glass sheets in a window manufacturing facility located right across the road. Both companies also have exemplary employee safety programs so it will be beneficial for the students to examine how a best practice safety program supports the success of two global companies.
