RE: Off-Campus, University-Sanctioned Event
FROM: Martin Olague, Director – Center of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging
The Center of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (DIBs) Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time. The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies. Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university’s policies* is appreciated. Thank you for your support and cooperation. Additional details are below.
Dates & Times (“activities should not be scheduled during the final exam period or one week prior to final examinations”): Friday April 21st, Saturday, April 22nd, and Sunday April 23rd
Activity: Center of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (DIBs) is participating in the National Hmong Development Conference (HND) at the Hilton Regency Hotel in Milwaukee on Friday April 21st, Saturday, April 22nd, and Sunday April 23rd. Hosted by Hmong American Partnership the annual HND Conference provides an opportunity for Hmong students to come together and talk about pressing issues in the community, listen to inspiring speakers, network, and strategize ways to move the community forward.
Academic Rationale for Absence: Past students have found this conference energizing, inspiring and felt the need to return. Hmong students have also found the experience to be greatly beneficial as there are very little avenues for them to build community outside of their community. Our hope is that students will leave with new perspectives, awareness of their own strengths, new professional and personal network connections, and a growing confidence in their possibilities.
