APPROVED MARCH 4, 2014

March 3, 2014

TO: UWRF Colleagues

RE: Off-Campus,
University-Sanctioned Event

FROM: Steven Kelm,
Department of Animal and
Food Science

The Animal and Food
Science Department is
sponsoring an off-campus
activity and a student in
your course might miss
class time.  The offices
of the Provost and the
Associate Vice Chancellor
of Academic Affairs
require that students
provide this notice to
you no later than one
week prior to their
scheduled activity to be
in compliance with
appropriate policies.
Your consideration in
allowing them to complete
course assignments and
work in compliance with
these university’s
policies* is appreciated.
 Thank you for your
support and cooperation.
 Additional details are
below.

Dates & Times: Departure:
Tuesday, March 11 at 5
PM; Return: Thursday,
March 13 at 9 PM

Activity: PDPW Annual
Business Conference (PDPW
= Professional Dairy
Producers of WI), March
12 – 13, in Madison, WI
(Alliant Energy Center).
 The conference is a
2-day event that brings
together over 1,000 dairy
industry professionals
for seminars on business
management and
cutting-edge technology
within the dairy
industry. Each year the
PDPW organization has
assembled an educational
program specifically for
students within the UW
system. Students must
apply to be accepted into
this program and complete
work prior to the
conference to be eligible
to attend.

Academic Rationale for
Absence: Students who are
attending have been
accepted into the PDPW
Mentorship program. The
Mentorship program
matches students with
industry professionals
for job shadowing prior
to the conference. At
the conference, students
and mentors attend large
group sessions on topics
ranging from business
leadership style to food
safety concerns. Small
group sessions are more
focused on dairy cattle
husbandry issues such as
animal welfare and
behavior, facility design
and improvement, and new
developments within
ruminant nutrition. A
link to the program
schedule is provided:

8.2.11 University
Sponsored Off-campus
Activities and Field
Trips: Students will not
be penalized for missing
class in order to
participate in University
sanctioned events. If
class attendance is a
requirement, missing a
class in order to
participate in a
University-sanctioned
event will not be counted
as an absence. Such
absences do not relieve
the students of any of
their class
responsibilities (e.g.,
homework, exams, lecture
notes, etc.). Students
are responsible for
completing course
requirements that are due
on the dates of
University-sanctioned
events per prior
agreement with the
instructor. A
University-sanctioned
event is defined to be
any extracurricular event
(e.g., educational field
trips or conferences,
theatrical performances,
intercollegiate athletic
contests, musical
performance or tours,
etc.) as approved by the
Provost and Vice
Chancellor for Academic
Affairs.
