The Animal and Food Science Department is sponsoring an off-campus activity and a student in your course might miss class time.  The offices of the Provost and the Associate Vice Chancellor require that students provide this notice to you no later than one week prior to their scheduled activity to be in compliance with appropriate policies.  Your consideration in allowing them to complete course assignments and work in compliance with these university's policies* is appreciated.  Thank you for your support and cooperation.  Additional details are below.
Dates & Times: leaving Wednesday, 2/7 at 10 am, returning 2/9 at 11 pm
Activity: Students will participate in the Midwest Dairy Challenge. This is an educational event where students interact with other Universities and Technical Colleges in the Midwest region to evaluate dairy farms. They use the knowledge learned in classes to be part of a consulting team and develop a PowerPoint presentation for a panel of judges. They are provided with data records and financial information for their farm and need to wisely utilize their time to evaluate and summarize the pros and cons of the farm. They are also given a chance to network with industry professionals and other Midwestern students.
Academic Rationale for Absence: The Dairy Challenge is an educational event where students use their book knowledge and hands-on experiences to form a team, evaluate a farm, and come to the conclusions as a consultant would. They are provided with all the records and financial information and need to work with their team members in a fast-paced competition to present their conclusions to a panel of professionals in the industry who serve as judges. It's a great experience that is similar to the real world and gives students a chance to gain experience as a consultant.
