In Memoriam

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls community is mourning the passing of our first honorary doctoral degree recipient, Chinese dissident, Fang Lizhi (1992). Fang Lizhi, was China's leading astrophysicist and in his early years a loyal member of the Communist Party. He later became an advocate of economic and democratic freedoms and his speeches helped inspire the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and ultimately, his exile. He died on Friday, April 6 in Tucson, Ariz. He was 76. To view his New York Times obituary, visit: http://nyti.ms/HH8yzE

Spruce Street Closures Wednesday, April 11 and Thursday, April 12

Water main installation will require the closure of the Cascade Ave/Spruce Street intersection on Wednesday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and perhaps again on Thursday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. if necessary to complete.This will affect parking in K, S, and P lots.  Alternative parking plans should be made for both days per the memo sent on Friday to permit holders in those lots. Initial emergency access for Police/Fire, and Ambulance to Spruce Street south of Cascade Avenue can be made via the concrete walk on the south side of Stratton Hall. In the event of a larger emergency, contractor will reestablish access through Cascade/Spruce.

Ann Lydecker Lecture Series, Thursday, April 26
Chancellor Jacqueline Johnson, University of Minnesota-Morris, will be the guest speaker at the Ann Lydecker Lecture Series on Thursday, April 26. Chancellor Johnson’s lecture, which will focus on women and leadership in higher education, will take place from 10:30-11:45 a.m. in the Kinnickinnic Theatre.
 
Jacqueline Johnson currently serves as the fifth chancellor and the first female chancellor of the University of Minnesota, Morris, a position she has held since August, 2006.  She earned her bachelor’s degree at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, her Master’s and Ph.D. in sociology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and began her career as a faculty member and administrator at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. Johnson was chief academic officer at both Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington and at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa before joining the University of Minnesota system. She is a member of the board of Pioneer Public Television; Minnesota Campus Compact; the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education; and the steering committee of the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment. Her research interests include gender studies, social psychology, and comparative culture.
 
Led by students seeking change, she and her colleagues at the University of Minnesota, Morris, are working to achieve carbon neutrality (through a combined heating and power system of renewable energy sources) and achieve fossil fuel energy independence on a campus that serves as a demonstration platform for sustainability and environmental stewardship.
 
The lecture series was created in the memory of the late UWRF Chancellor Ann Lydecker and features a speaker on the issues facing women leaders in many contexts, both in academia and beyond. The series is made possible by Bill Lydecker, Ann's husband, through the Ann Lydecker Lecture Series Fund of the UWRF Foundation.
