Jazz Fest guest artist inspires area music students


Guest Artist Leonard Foy plays trumpet with the UWRF Jazz Ensemble Friday in Abbott Concert Hall, kicking off the 2012 UW-River Falls Jazz Festival. The ensemble performed a collection of pieces associated with well-known jazz trumpeters such as Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. Icy conditions may present problems
Snow, sleet, and rain are all forecasted throughout today and tomorrow morning. Given the temperatures, precipitation will likely be in various forms over the next 24 hours.  Fortunately the snow forecast is quite minimal, but icy conditions may present problems. Please be especially mindful this evening and into tomorrow whether on foot or in your vehicles. Contact Facilities at 3827.

Memorial service for Terry Willson
A memorial service for Terry Willson, 61, who died unexpectedly on Sunday will be held Friday, March 2, at 11 a.m. at the New Richmond United Methodist Church. Memorial visitation will be held Thursday, March 1, from 4-8 p.m. at the New Richmond United Methodist Church and on Friday from 10-11 a.m. also at the church. Memorials may be directed to the New Richmond United Methodist Church. Arrangements are with Bakken-Young Funeral & Cremation Services Beebe Chapel of New Richmond. Terry worked on campus in Residence Life from 1976-2007.

Important survey for all UWRF travelers
Reminder to everyone who travels on university business:  Please take a few minutes to complete a survey developed by members of the System-wide Travel Management and Operations Committee. Estimated completion time is less than 15 minutes. This is your chance to provide input for a new UW System-wide travel program to be implemented July 1, 2013. Contact david.g.sorenson@uwrf.edu.

Men's and women's basketball and women's hockey game information
Men's basketball
River Falls will host first and second round games on Friday and Saturday, March 2-3. On Friday, Gustavus Adolphus College plays Wheaton College at 5:30 p.m. UW-River Falls plays Edgewood College at 8 p.m. On Saturday the two winners from Friday will play at 7 p.m. Games are all at Karges. Tickets will go on sale at 8 a.m. at the Athletic Office in Hagestad Hall. Cost is $7/adults; $3/students with ID and senior citizens. Those age two and under are admitted free. Friday we are running a split session which means that a person would have to purchase a ticket for each game.

Women's basketball
River Falls will be playing a first round game at the University of St. Thomas. The River Falls women play Coe College at 5:30 p.m., on Friday. If they win on Friday, they would play the winner of the St. Thomas/Martin Luther game on Saturday--not sure what time yet.

Women's hockey is hosting the NCHA semifinals and finals at Hunt Arena. UW-Superior plays Adrian on Friday at 3:05 p.m. UWRF will play Lake Forest at 7:05 p.m. On Saturday at 4:05 p.m., the winners from Friday's game will play for the championship. The champion earns the NCHA's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. That field will be announced on Monday, March 5. Hockey tickets will be on sale at the door. Ticket prices are $8/adults, $4/students with ID and seniors.

Upcoming Events

Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2-3:15 p.m., Kinnickinnic Theater, UC, Film:  "Made in China," sponsored by the UWRF Association for International Development as part of their spring video series. The film tells one of the millions of stories of migrants from rural China who comprise the backbone of the Chinese economic miracle. A discussion will follow the viewing. Free and open to the public. Contact paige.miller@uwrf.edu.

Wednesday, Feb. 29, 7:30 p.m., Riverview Ballroom, UC, Michelle Alexander: The New Jim Crow. Lecture and book signing. Alexander is a longtime civil rights advocate and litigator. Contact karyn.wells@uwrf.edu.

*  5:30-6:30 p.m., Trimbelle River Room, UC, "Was the Creation of the Universe a Natural Event?" by Paul Simms a retired professor of physics at Purdue University and former director of the Purdue Nuclear Accelerator Laboratory. Part of "Christianity Exposed," a series hosted by InterVarsity. Also offered Feb. 29.

*  7:30 p.m., Syse Theatre, KFA, Theatre:  "Almost, Maine." On a cold, clear moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Some age appropriate material is implied. Admission is $10/adults, $8/seniors (60+), $5/students with ID. General seating. Performances on Feb. 29 and March 1-3 also.
