Strategic Plan update offered at Town Hall meeting


An update on items that will form the foundation of UWRF's 2012-17 Strategic Plan were offered at a Town Hall meeting Wednesday in the UC by Chancellor Dean Van Galen, CBE Dean Glenn Potts, Faculty Senate Chair Wes Chapin and Vice Chancellor Joseph Harbouk. Attendees heard a summary of emerging strategic themes, challenges and opportunities identified in the August unit and Town Hall meetings, online feedback, and Chancellor’s community luncheons; and a draft Mission, Vision, and Core Values for UWRF. Gear Up Get Read program is Nov. 17
Some 230 middle school students from Washington Technology Magnet School in St. Paul will be on campus on Thursday, Nov. 17, as part of the biannual Gear Up Get Ready program. Students from Teacher Education courses (TED212: Educational Psychology) will chaperone the 7th graders and facilitate activities for them around campus. The schedule will be set so that no UWRF student is required to miss classes. However, it may be helpful if they are excused from part of their responsibilities for that day. Students may also be asking about the use of supplies and spaces on campus for hosting activities Nov. 17. Thank you for in advance for giving them every consideration possible. International Education Week (Nov. 14-18) is a joint initiative between the U.S. Departments of Education and State. It celebrates the benefits of understanding the world around us so we can better communicate and collaborate with others from different cultures. It is an ideal opportunity to inspire students to broaden their horizons through global learning, foreign languages, and international exchange. Annual Horticulture Society Poinsettia sale
The Annual Horticulture Society Poinsettia sale will take place Dec. 7- 8,  from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., in the UC lobby, and Dec. 9, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the second floor atrium of the Ag Science building. There are various colors and sizes of Poinsettias (4.5"-6.5") as well as Cylcamen, Norfolk Pines (4"-8") and fresh Minnesota-made wreaths (24"-36") and swags.  Pre-order forms are available through Nov. 16 for on-campus delivery Dec. 6-7. Upcoming Events

Monday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m.-noon, Kinnickinnic Theater, UC, Slideshow and presentation by Chilean Artist Benjamín Lira. Lira will be on campus as a Visiting Artist Nov. 7-8. Lira's materials stretch from paint to paper constructions and finally enter the sculptural realm with his creation of megalithic heads from clay. His monumental ceramics can weigh up to 200 lbs., taking several months to make and more than a month just to dry. Through all his exploration of various mediums he sustains his signature abstraction of the human condition through form, presenting only the essentials in his facial structures.

*  noon-1 p.m., St. Croix Room, UC, Chancellor's open session on budget lapse. The most recent information on the budget lapse proposed by the Wisconsin Department of Administration will be provided and there will be an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas and concerns at this Town Hall style gathering . All members of the campus community are welcome. Please feel free to bring your lunch. 

*  12:30-2 pm., Kinnickinnic Theater, UC, Association for International Development Film Series:  "Endless Revolution." The film examines American intervention in Haiti by focusing on the removal of Jean Bertrand Aristide from power in 1991 and 2004. A discussion will follow the viewing of the film. Classified staff position openings/exams on campus
The Office of Human Resources has a vacancy for a permanent classified human resources assistant. Those who are interested in this position should take the upcoming Human Resources Assistant exam offered on campus Monday, Nov. 14. It will also be held in other locations throughout the state on Saturday, Nov. 12. Now You Know

More than 1,500 students, family members and alumni attended Family Day 2011 on Oct. 29. During Family Day, attendees had the opportunity to spend time at Breakfast With the Chancellor and other Campus Administrators, have a family photo taken with Freddy, cheer on the Falcons at women’s volleyball, men’s hockey, and football, enjoy the Falcon Feast, participate in a scavenger hunt sponsored by Global Connections, visit a Haunted Lab sponsored by the Chem Demons and SPS, tour the campus greenhouse, take in a Dairy Learning Center tour, observe ceramics and printmaking demonstrations, and so much more.  Photos from the event will be posted soon at http://www.uwrf.edu/NewStudentAndFamilyPrograms/FamilyDay.cfm.
