Now you know
A rare corpse flower is getting ready to
bloom for the first time in the UWRF greenhouse.
So named for its overwhelmingly odiferous
trait, the smell of a corpse flower bloom has been likened to
decomposing flesh, rotten eggs, or rancid fish. The titan arum seedling was a gift from
UW-Madison in 2001.
UWRFâ??s corpse flower plant is 37.5 inches
tall this morning, having measured 30 inches on Friday.
As it changes so rapidly, updates on the
corpse flower is available via a Web page at http://www2.uwrf.edu/
college-of-agriculture/
CorpseFlower.htm. Those who want to take a whiff of the bloom for
themselves can find information on public viewing times on the page.

Protect yourself against the flu
The U.S. Public Health Emergency for 2009 H1N1 Influenza expired on
June 23. On Aug. 10, the World Health Organization declared an end to
the 2009 H1N1 pandemic globally. However, seasonal influenza remains a
concern. One of the best ways to avoid getting influenza is to get an
annual flu (influenza) shot. All people six months and older are now
recommended to receive annual influenza vaccination. The 2010-11 flu
vaccine is being made in the same way as seasonal vaccines have been
made for decades. It will protect against the 2009 H1N1 virus that
caused so much illness last season, and two other influenza viruses (an
H3N2 virus and an influenza B virus). For more information about the
2010-11 flu season and flu vaccine, including where to go for flu shots
locally, visit http://www.uwrf.edu/StudentHealthServices/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfile&PageID=75959
Two seasonal influenza vaccine clinics are planned for campus
this fall:
1. Generally for UWRF faculty and staff:Â
Tuesday, Oct. 26, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Wind
River Room, UC. Employee insurances that will be accepted are Humana,
Blue Cross/Blue Shield-Anthem, Health Partners, and WPS. Employees
with Group Health insurance or anyone else can receive a flu shot for
$35. For those with accepted health insurances, your insurance will be
billed for the cost of the flu vaccine with presentation of a current
and active health insurance card.
2. Generally for UWRF students:Â
The second influenza vaccine clinic will be held on Wednesday, Oct.
27, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the Wind River Room, UC. The cost for
flu shots at this campus clinic will $25 for students (subsidized by
Student Health Services) and $30 for non-students (so anyone can
receive a seasonal flu shot at this clinic for $30).
Take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.
Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands often with soap
and water,
especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are
also effective.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
If you donâ??t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or
shoulder; not into your hands.
Stay home when you are sick. Flu symptoms may include fever,
coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches, body aches,
chills, and fatigue, and vomiting and diarrhea may also occur. If you
have influenza symptoms do not go to classes or work for at least 24
hours after you no longer have a fever.
In most cases, healthy individuals who develop influenza symptoms do
not need to
seek medical attention. Those with underlying medical conditions who
develop influenza symptoms should contact their health care provider.
UWRF students can contact the River Falls Medical Clinic at
715/425-8208 or 6701 or their own health care provider. UWRF faculty
and staff should contact their health care provider. For more
information or questions, contact Student Health Services at 3293 or
visit http://uwrf.edu/studenthealth/
or e-mail alice.m.reilly-myklebust@uwrf.edu.
