Van Galen photoUWRF Chancellor Dean Van Galen has been appointed to a three-year term as a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Committee on the Undergraduate Experience.

In this capacity, Van Galen will serve on the committee that helps AASCU presidents and chancellors develop and share strategies to enhance both the academic and extracurricular experience of their undergraduate students.

“I am looking forward to serving AASCU in this role,” said Van Galen. “This will be an opportunity to share some of the outstanding work going on at UW-River Falls with other higher education leaders as well as to learn about best practices of other institutions.”

Senior art exhibit draws audience

UWRF art student Tom Fritchen (left) greets guests at a reception Friday evening in Gallery 101, KFA, where he and fellow art student Christy Nelson are exhibiting their senior show to fulfill requirements for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The exhibit is open through tomorrow, Nov. 24. Fritchen’s collection, “My Isolation,” is an exploration of self-fulfillment through painting figurative gestures. Nelson’s collection, “Just Beginning,” is a study of techniques in rug weaving. Mandated furlough reminder
The University is on mandated furlough on Friday, Nov. 27. All staff are reminded to set their out-of-office e-mail and voice mail. Following are recommended scripts for your use:
E-mail out-of-office message:
"Thank you for your (e-mail) (message). We are on a state mandated furlough and the campus is closed (today) (Nov. 27). We will respond to your message as soon as possible after we return on Monday, Nov. 30."
Voice mail out-of-office message:
"Thank you for calling. This is (your name). Today, (date - Nov. 27), UW-River Falls is on a  state mandated furlough and the campus is closed. Please leave a message so that I can return your call (day or date)."
All University employees should report furlough hours on their furlough report/time sheet for this day. You can also find the e-mail and voice mail scripts at http://www.uwrf.edu/hr.

Academic staff promotion/title change requests reminder
Non-instructional academic staff who seek a promotion/title change must initiate the process by informing their immediate supervisor in writing of the intent to pursue a promotion/title change no later than Wednesday, Nov. 25. Read 6.15.1.1 of the Faculty and Academic Handbook for the complete procedure. Contact Tarra Davies-Fox at ext. 3926.

Webinar training for Fox World Travel’s new booking tool
On Monday, Nov. 30, UWRF will be implementing a new online booking tool for Fox World Travel. Cliqbook, the new booking tool, will be compatible with all standard internet browsers and is expected to be very user friendly similar to many familiar commercial booking sites. CPR training scheduled
Three training sessions in CPR training have been scheduled at UWRF on Dec. 1 and 8. The deadline to sign up for a session is Wednesday, Nov. 25. Sessions will be four hours in length. You will need to attend one four-hour session in order to get your certification card. The sessions, taught by a certified trainer through the American Heart Association, will cost $60 which includes a face shield and textbook. Make out a check to UWRF and forward to Connie Smith in 25H North Hall before the class starts in order to secure your spot. Session One is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 8 a.m. to noon; Session Two is Dec. 1 from noon - 4 p.m.; Session Three is Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 6 - 10 p.m. All sessions are in the Chippewa River Room, UC. Grant opportunities
1. Office of Postsecondary Education: The Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language program provides grants to strengthen and improve undergraduate instruction in international studies and foreign languages. 2. Corporation for National and Community Service: Learn and Serve America Summer of Service FY10 grant. Summer of Service grants will support collaborative efforts to implement community-based service-learning projects during the summer months. Programs will engage middle school students (students who will be enrolled in grades six through nine in the school year following the end of the summer) in community-based service-learning projects that are intensive, structured, supervised, and designed to produce identifiable improvements to the community. This opportunity should provide youth, particularly those from disadvantaged circumstances, with service-learning experiences that motivate them to become more engaged and aspire to obtain higher education. Program participants must complete at least 100 hours of service within the summer program. Service activities should address environmental and/or disaster preparedness issues relevant to the community served. Deadline is Dec. 10.
