Now you know
The international IceCube project is a collaborative effort
involving 15 U.S. groups together with partners from Belgium, Germany,
Japan, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, and The United Kingdom. They
are working to better understand some of the most energetic events in
the universe.
UWRF is one of two undergraduate schools involved. This gives
UWRF physics students an opportunity to participate in cutting edge
research.

Students head out for Antarctic project
Last week the Physics Department hosted an open
house/send off for three students who
are part of an upcoming Antarctic research cruise associated with the
IceCube project at the South Pole. Students Kyle Jero (UWRF physics
major), left, and Samantha Jakel (UW-Rock County engineering major),
right, are now in Sweden for a week of training. Find their blogs at http://www.uwrf.edu/icecube/kyle%20jero%20blog.htm.
Drew Anderson (UWRF physics major), center, will leave Saturday for
Sweden where he will stay until Nov. 20 doing a final checkout on the
experiment. He will then head out on the Oden IceBreaker on Nov. 20 for
a 20-to-30-day journey to Monte Video, Uruguay. In Monte Video,
Anderson will give a talk on the science project at the US Embassy.
Jakel will fly to Monte Video, and replace Anderson for the trip to
Antarctica. Jero gets the return leg, leaving at the beginning of
February 2010 from Antarctica to Punta Arenas, Chile. For more
information on the project, contact james.madsen@uwrf.edu. For
