Now you know
During Saturday's Commencement Ceremony a UWRF alumna who died
in Iraq will be remembered.
Army 2nd Lt. Tracy Alger, a 2001 graduate, was killed by an improvised
explosive devise while escorting a convoy of the 101st Airborne
Division on Nov. 1. She was the first UWRF alumnus to be lost to
hostile action in the War on Terror.
Alger was on her third tour of duty in Iraq, and her
leadership qualities always inspired her to take care of the men and
women under her
command. Her convoy responsibilities did not require Lt. Alger to
participate in dangerous escort assignments, but she did so because her
troops took priority over her own safety.
At UWRF, Alger majored in marketing communication and graphic design.
At the University she was a barrel racer with the Rodeo Club. She was
elected President of the Wisconsin Girl’s Barrel Racing Association.
On Nov. 12, two days after Alger was laid to rest, she was memorialized
during the campus’s Veterans Day observance. At the initiative of our
veterans and service men and women on campus, a new United States flag
was flown in observance of Tracy’s sacrifice as part of this
decades-old ceremony.
Accepting the flag on behalf of the family of Lt. Alger will be two
UWRF alumnae who forged a bond with her during their college days
together.
Carrie Hickman graduated in 2000 and is now serving as a security
assistant with the New Auburn school district. Mickie Larson Moos, also
a 2000 graduate, is living in Prairie Farm. She was introduced to her
husband, David, by Alger. Mickie and David are the parents of three
children.
More than 150 UWRF students, faculty and staff are in the National
Guard, Reserves or are veterans.
