Degrees conferred to 700 on Saturday

A little rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the 700 graduates who received their degrees on Saturday at UW-RF, marking the beginning of new educational, career, and life endeavors. Chancellor Betz welcomed the almost 6,000 family and friends who attended morning and afternoon ceremonies. New graduate James Arati and his wife, Jacqueline Mogendi, celebrate between showers outside Knowles. Fall Opening Day packet information. As we look toward our 2006 fall semester, we will gather once again as a University community on Monday, Aug. 21, for Opening Day activities. We continue to work toward the goal of electronic distribution of materials; and again this year, we hope to limit the printed materials in the packets. If you anticipate providing printed material in that packet, please contact Alice Cernohous at alice.m.cernohous@uwrf.edu for information regarding distribution procedures (i.e., number of copies needed, due date, what you would like to include, etc.). Thanks for your cooperation as we begin planning for next year.

The St. Croix Valley Community Band begins its summer season June 13. Rehearsals are Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 129 KFA. Concerts are at 7 p.m. on the following dates:
Friday, June 23, in Abbott Concert Hall featuring the 102nd Army Band.
Tuesday, July 25, at the UW-RF Amphitheater.
Wednesday, July 26, at Peterson's Farm in Glenwood City.
Thursday, July 27, at the Hudson Band Shell.

Area singers of high school age or older are invited to sing with the St. Croix Valley Summer Chorus at UW-RF during its 2006 season. Rehearsals are Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. in Room 134 KFA, beginning June 26. The chorus will perform in a free concert on Thursday, July 27, in the Abbott Concert Hall, KFA, with time to be determined. The concert features a repertoire of choral music from the classics to popular arrangements. Contact Paul Schaefer at ext. 3183 or simply show up at the first rehearsal.

Saturday, June 3, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Glen Park, KinniFest: A Celebration of Our River.
Attend the first annual KinniFest and learn about the Kinickkinnic River and the resources it provides for the community. Festival-goers may particpate in eight guided field trips at various times throughout the day, starting with birdwatching at 7 a.m. The event includes demonstrations and exhibits by local businesses, artists, organizations and schools. Children can read a compass, examine mammal bones and pelts, preserve a flower and taste plants at the eight fun and educational stations at the Children’s Discovery Realm. Free. Don't Forget

Annual boiler maintenance shutdown. Please note that the boilers are down every spring for two weeks following the res hall closing. Steam that provides hot water, cooking, distilling, pasteurization, drying and sterilization will not be available. The Spring 2006 shutdown began May 13 and will be started at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30. For further information, call ext. 3955.

Grades are due no later than 3 p.m. Friday, May 19. The deadline is very important because many things are based on that date (e.g. Dean's List, Probation/Suspension, Graduation, Financial Aid-Satisfactory Progress, etc.). Summer Advising Workshop for chairs and supplemental advisors. Remember to put Tuesday, May 30, 1 p.m. , River Room, Rodli, on your calendars. The Pigeon Lake Field Station, run by UW-RF, has openings for classes and conferences from mid-July through mid-August. Located in the Chequamegon National Forest, just ten miles from Cable, the facilities include comfortable cabins, well-equipped classroom buildings, meeting rooms and a lake view dining hall. Costs for establishing classes includes room and board of $44 per day, plus tuition and lab fees as established by instructors and the UW System. Conferences and meetings are $44 per day per person with additional costs as needed for snacks. Information on reservations can be made by contacting the Pigeon Lake Office at ext. 3348.

New student Move In Day greeters needed for Sunday, Sept. 3. We would like to extend an invitation to assist new students and their families with moving into the residence halls on Sept. 3. It would be a great opportunity for you to help welcome new students to campus. You will receive a "Move-In Crew" t-shirt and will be supplied with plenty of water throughout the day. Move-in times run from 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., and two hour shifts are encouraged. If you are willing to participate, contact Kristie at kristie.feist@uwrf.edu. Your t-shirt can be picked up on Sept. 3 at the "Welcome Station" on the Student Center mall.

Sarah Ressel, a junior from Osseo, is the first recipient of the Robert G. Sievert Student Service Award. The award is given in honor of Bob Sievert, who served as University Centers Director for a number years prior to his retirement in 2005. A plaque denoting the honor will hang in the Robert G. 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m., Room 118 WEB, Where Have All the Young Men Gone? Presented by Geoffrey Scheurman, department of teacher education. The trend of diminishing numbers of male students on university campuses continues to intensify, revealing issues about what's happening long before college, in and out of school. We'll look at just enough research and conjecture to begin a multi-perspective and interdisciplinary dialogue on a growing but often ignored problem.

1 p.m. - 5 p.m., Room 118 WEB, Successful Mentoring Practices, coordinated by Mary Manke, COEPS Dean's Office. This session is for faculty assigned to mentor new faculty, and for university supervisors of student teachers. Participants will learn how to make mentoring a positive and useful experience for both mentor and mentee; how to observe someone's teaching and provide clear and constructive feedback; how to find an effective entry point for dealing with problems that may arise.

9 a.m. - 4 p.m. , Room 118 WEB, A "CLEAR and SIMPLE" Approach to Assessment of Student Learning. Presented by Barbara Walvoord (University of Notre Dame).
GOAL: Participants will emerge from the workshop with a plan for assessment (or revision/affirmation of previous plan) that is sensible, feasible, useful to the department for its own goals, and consonant with regional and professional accreditation guidelines. ISSUES ADDRESSED: How to establish learning goals, select measures, and use the information. How can the grading process be useful for assessment? How can the most ineffable goals (e.g. "originality") be assessed? What are the dangers of assessment? What can assessment do for the department and its students? What is the most basic, no-frills assessment plan?

It is time to solicit nominations for the Chancellor’s Recognition Award for Classified Staff and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence for Academic Staff. Important parts of our UW-RF traditions, these awards honor outstanding service to the University. Details of the nomination process are available at http://www.uwrf.edu/administration/award_for_excellence/. The deadline for submitting these entries is Friday, July 7. We are making some changes in when we announce award recipients. The 2006 Distinguished Teacher has been announced and will be on the Commencement platform May 13 for formal recognition. The announcement for the Advisor of the Year is forthcoming. The announcement of the Academic Staff and Classified recipients will be late summer. We will celebrate these award winners at a special event during the opening weeks of fall semester. We have many outstanding, dedicated individuals at UW-RF; please support these individuals through your thoughtful nominations.

New staff join UW-RF Enrollment Management Leadership Team. Dan Vande Yacht will begin as registrar at UW-RF on July 10. He is presently the registrar and director of admissions for the UW Colleges. He has worked for UW System Learning Innovations and was registrar at Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Sandra Oftedahl will being as director of financial aid at UW-RF on June 1. Sandy previously held positions in financial aid, student information systems, and project management at Central Washington University. Contact Alan Tuchtenhagen at ext. 3500.

A variety of construction projects will occur this summer at UW-RF. While the majority of these projects will be invisible to the general public, some will be more obvious and/or intrusive than others. The projects include window replacement in North Hall, exterior door replacement and drainage issues for South Hall, siding replacement on the penthouse of Ag Science as well as other projects in Ag Science, installation of a new water heater in Knowles, various updates and painting in the res halls, the rebuilding two of the three boilers in the Heating Plant, continued construction on the new Student Center and the painting of parking lots, curbs and crosswalks.
